Email Attachments - View Online

This article addresses those using Webmail with the online versions of Microsoft Office.
There are 3 options to view files attached to an incoming email.
  • Preview
  • Save to OneDrive
  • Download

Preview:
This will simply view the file in Outlook.

Save to OneDrive:
Save to OneDrive will save the file to your "Attachments" folder in OneDrive.  After selecting Save to OneDrive go to the Attachment folder and right click and select View online.

After you have Saved to OneDrive, you can also select "View in OneDrive". This will open your browser and take you to the file in OneDrive online.

Download:
Download will save the file to the Downloads folder.  Again, go to the "Downloads" folder and right click - View online. You cannot double click Microsoft office files.  Download does not have a View in Download option like OneDrive.  Downloads is a temporary location and will purge after 7 days in a file's inactivity.

Word and Excel Files:
If the file attachment is a Microsoft Word or Excel file there are other options.
  1. Edit in Browser
  2. Edit in Word (or Excel) Desktop app (will not work.)
Edit in Browser will open the file in the Online version of Word or Excel.  Be careful with the and make sure you save the file in a location you can remember.
Edit in Word (or Excel) Desktop app will not work.  You only have the online version, the desktop app is not installed.
